Director’s Notes
Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is arguably the most performed play in the English speaking world. Yes, it is probably overdone. But there is a reason for this. It is a truly great play. Full of magic, wonder, and with an unabashed spirit of pure joy, all voiced through some of the most beautiful and accessible poetry ever written. As an educator, I felt this was the perfect choice to introduce students (many acting in a play for the first time) to great theatre and what I consider to be worth a year of Language Arts. And personally, as well as an artist who does theatre for social change for a living, I just needed the joy. This delightful experience and sweet cast became my oasis during a time that so many in the world (and in our community) are suffering.
And, why Ireland you may ask? In all my travels, that is the only place I have seen faeries, alive and well. I first conceived this production as a young director in the mid-1980’s in New York City, a few years after I traveled in Ireland and heard many faerie stories, all told with a great deal of seriousness (and perhaps a wee twinkle in the eye.) Then when I opened the door to the back room of the Eagle Tavern on 28th St., a massive wave of live traditional Irish music caused me to sob uncontrollably. With joy.
That music perfectly captured the heart and spirit of the play. I will never forget that moment.
My hope is that you too, feel this heart and spirit as you watch our amazing, passionate group of young actors and musicians share their magic. And may we all get a little joy oasis as we attempt to rehumanize our humanity.
